START WITH THE CORRECT LOCAL OFFICE.

Fence permit and placement requirements depend on your municipality and property. Do not assume a neighbor’s fence or an old installation establishes what is allowed. Confirm your governing town, proposed height, placement and any pool use with the zoning and construction offices before work is scheduled.

Where do I start?

Use your property records to identify the municipality and bring the survey, proposed fence line and height to the local office. Locality names such as Lincroft or Wanamassa may not name the governing municipality.

What about underground utilities?

New Jersey One Call says to request a markout at least three full business days before digging, excluding weekends and holidays. Confirm the markout is complete and follow its instructions. Private facilities may need separate consideration.

Does approval cover everything?

Association rules, easements and property-specific restrictions can raise separate questions. Ask the appropriate authority rather than relying on a general website answer.
